The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has resigned from office. The embattled Minister who has dominated social and mainstream media conversations over the theft of huge sums of money from her home tendered her resignation letter to President Akufo-Addo on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
This decision came after her two house helps allegedly stole $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis at her residence in Abelenkpe, Accra, in October 2022.
Cecilia Abena Dapaah was initially appointed as Minister for Aviation by President Akufo-Addo in January 2017 and later moved to the Sanitation and Water Resources ministry in a reshuffle. She was reappointed to the same portfolio when President Akufo-Addo began his second term in office.
In her resignation letter, Ms Dapaah stated that she does not want her personal issues to hinder the government’s work and expressed her willingness to cooperate fully with any state agencies conducting investigations.
Before her resignation, Ms Dapaah issued a statement pointing out noticeable inconsistencies between what was being discussed in the public domain and the original complaint she filed regarding the stolen monies at her residence. She mentioned that she was examining these inconsistencies and would provide a detailed response in the coming days.
The case of theft involved five accused persons, including house helps and their associates. The stolen money was reportedly used to acquire various properties and items, including a house, cars, and household appliances.
