Election 2024 will be different from Assin North – NPP confident of prospects

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed confidence in its ability to retain power in the 2024 general elections despite its failure to win the Assin North by-election.

According to a Deputy Energy Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer, next year’s polls will be a completely different set of circumstances.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy News, the Sekondi MP acknowledged the current economic crisis but pointed to clear indicators of economic recovery. He believes that with these positive signs, Ghanaians will trust the NPP to effectively manage the country’s affairs and economy going forward.

Election 2024: NDC’s Assin North by-election win has boosted its confidence – Dr Kojo Asante

Mercer’s remarks were made in response to suggestions by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that their victory in the Assin North by-election signifies success for the party in the 2024 election. Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC Communications Officer, characterized the by-election as a referendum on the performance of the NPP government and claimed that it demonstrated weariness with the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Bawumia.

However, Mercer disagrees with this perspective, stating, “I don’t share the view that this is what is going to transpire in 2024 at all.” He did acknowledge that the Assin North by-election would provide the party with valuable insights to reposition itself for the next election.
