Ghana’s Parliament has finally begun the consideration of the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021” popularly known as the anti-gay bill.
The object of the Bill as contained in the memorandum accompanying the Bill, is to provide for proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values; proscribe LGBTQ+ and related activities; proscribe propaganda of, advocacy for or promotion of LGBTTQQIAAP+ and related activities; provide for the protection of and ensure the protection and support of individuals, especially children, associated with LGBTQ+ matters, was originally scheduled for consideration on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday.
However, the absence of Chairman Kwame Ayimadu-Antwi of the Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee prevented its advancement.
The situation left proponents of the bill infuriated at the setback. A visibly angry lead proponent of the bill, Sam George in expressing his frustration and disappointment alleged that influential members within the majority caucus were intentionally obstructing the bill.
Following an assurance by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, that the bill will be passed by the House before the Christmas break, the lawmakers are currently engaged in debating the bill.
The consideration stage of the bill allows MPs to provide input and subject its intricacies to a thorough and comprehensive debate.
