One of six remand prisoners who escaped from police cells at Konongo in the Ashanti Region has been rearrested, with five others still at large.
The incident occurred at the Konongo Police Station in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality, where the inmates reportedly escaped through a hole believed to have been dug to provide access to the station’s detached washrooms.
After making their way out of the cells, the prisoners reportedly jumped off and fled, prompting a police manhunt.
The operation led to the arrest of one of the escapees in a suburb of Kumasi, while efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining five.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Asante Akyem Central Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, disclosed that the Municipal Security Council was taking steps to strengthen security at the police station.
He also noted that the council planned to reinforce the walls of the police cells as part of immediate measures to prevent further escapes.
Dr Aidoo also outlined longer-term plans, including the construction of a new police station and an increase in police personnel, particularly during the night.
Additional measures will include improving lighting at the station and installing surveillance cameras to help monitor activities and prevent similar incidents.
