#OccupyJulorBiHouse: Over 50 demonstrators arrested as group defies police to protest

Despite warnings from the police, a large gathering of protesters assembled at the 37 Trotro Station in Accra on Thursday, September 21, 2023, to participate in the #OccupyJulorBiHouse.

But before that street protest could kick off, heavily armed officers of the Ghana Police Service closed in on the group and arrested 50 of their members who defied a last-minute injunction application from the force.

The protesters hit the streets in demand for a reduction in the cost of living, an end to corruption, and improved governance.

The demonstrators converged early on Thursday morning and attempted to march towards Jubilee House, the official residence of the President of Ghana.

Those arrested have been sent to the Accra Regional police headquarters in Accra Central.

The organizers argue that they did not receive any court notice, which led them to gather at the 37 Trotro Station.

At the assembly point, law enforcement officers were present with buses and armed personnel to apprehend the protesters. Among the key figures arrested is the #FixtheCountry convenor, Oliver Barker Vormawor.

The OccupyJubilee House protest represents the latest in a series of demonstrations against the government. In recent months, public dissatisfaction has been on the rise due to the increasing cost of living and the perceived failure of the government to address the concerns of the citizens.

Following the arrests, the police have maintained a heavy presence at the Jubilee House.

Scores of police personnel in crowd control vehicles and riot gear have lined up on the streets in front of the seat of government.
