Kotoka International Airport to Be Renamed Accra International Airport – Ayariga

The Mahama-led government has begun processes to rename Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport, with a bill expected to be submitted to Parliament for consideration.

The move was disclosed by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, during a Leadership Media Briefing in Parliament on Tuesday, February 2, 2026, as the House reconvened for the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament.

According to him, the decision forms part of broader efforts to ensure that Ghana’s democratic values and national identity are reflected in public institutions.

“Government intends to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” the Majority Leader stated, explaining that a bill would be laid before the House in accordance with established legal procedures.

He stressed that such a move must be grounded in law and guided by the will of the people, noting that Parliament will play a central role in deliberating on the matter once the bill is formally presented.

Ghana’s premier airport was in 1969 renamed Kotoka International Airport, in honour of the late Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a member of the National Liberation Council who was killed in an abortive coup at a location that is now the forecourt.
