Matthew Nyindam: Kpandai MP Resumes Parliamentary Duties Following Supreme Court Decision

The Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, resumed his parliamentary duties on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as lawmakers returned for the first meeting of the Second Session of Parliament, following a Supreme Court decision that resolved weeks of uncertainty over his seat.

Mr Nyindam’s return comes after a January 28 ruling by the Supreme Court, which set aside a judgment by the Tamale High Court that had annulled his election and ordered a rerun in the Kpandai Constituency in the Northern Region.

The apex court’s decision effectively halted plans by the Electoral Commission to conduct a fresh poll, clearing the way for the Kpandai MP to take his seat and continue his work in Parliament.

During proceedings, Mr Nyindam joined colleagues in paying tribute to the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Nasser Toure Mahama, describing him as a calm and non-partisan lawmaker.

“Alhaji was not excessively partisan; he treated everyone as a brother. He was not the loud type and did not speak much, but when he did, his words carried wisdom. He was calm, gentle and affable,” he said, while extending his condolences to the bereaved family.

The legal dispute dates back to November 24, 2025, when the Tamale High Court annulled Mr Nyindam’s election victory and ordered a fresh election within 30 days. Following that ruling, Parliament formally notified the Electoral Commission of a vacancy in the constituency.

In a letter dated December 4, 2025, the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, informed the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, that the court decision necessitated a rerun election, a process that the Supreme Court’s ruling has now halted.
