Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, a renowned journalist, communications consultant, and former Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), has passed away in London. He died on Monday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 74.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng was widely respected for his decades of service to journalism, media development, and cultural advocacy. He served as the Chairman of the 8th NMC from November 2015 to November 2018, succeeding Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere.
With a career spanning over 45 years, he worked as a reporter, editor, columnist, lecturer, and media trainer.
He began his journalism journey at the Daily Graphic in 1982 as a Staff Writer, later rising to the position of Foreign News Editor and briefly acting as Editor. He was later appointed Editor of The Mirror newspaper, where he introduced enduring news features and contributed a regular column.
Nana Gyan-Apenteng was also the Apagyahene of Tafo Eti in the Eastern Region. He held a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana and was an alumnus of Apam Secondary School.
He spent part of his career in the United Kingdom, where he co-founded Ghana News Magazine and served as Deputy Editor and Acting Editor of the London-based West Africa magazine in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He later founded African Topics, a pan-African magazine focused on governance and human rights.
Upon his return to Ghana, he worked with the Third World Network as Head of Communications and Editor of Africa Agenda. He also consulted for several prominent organisations, including MTN Ghana, UN agencies, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and STAR Ghana.
A former President of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW), Nana Gyan-Apenteng, was also involved with various cultural institutions such as the Cultural Initiatives Support Programme and the European Union Culture Fund for Ghana.
As an educator, he lectured part-time at Vauxhall College in London and the European University Centre for Peace Studies in Austria.
