Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day: Monday, September 23, Declared Public Holiday

The Ministry of Interior has announced that Monday, September 23, 2024, will be observed as a statutory public holiday in Ghana to commemorate Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day. The holiday, celebrated on September 21 each year, honours Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

In a statement issued on September 19, Interior Minister Henry Quartey said since this year’s Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day falls on Saturday, September 21, the public holiday will instead be observed on Monday, September 23, 2024.

“His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601), declared Monday, 23rd September 2024 as an additional Public Holiday, and it should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day which was created under the New Public Holidays Act of 2018, replaced the original Public Holidays Act of 2001. The day marks the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who was born on September 21, 1909, in Nkroful, near Axim, in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

If he were alive today, Dr. Nkrumah would have turned 115 years old.
