Professor Ernest Dumor, on behalf of the Dumor, Gbeho, and allied families, has sadly announced the passing of their beloved daughter, Mawuena Trebarh (nee Dumor). Mawuena departed from this world on the evening of Wednesday, April 10, 2024, following a recent illness, as stated in an official announcement.
“Professor Ernest Dumor, the Dumor, Gbeho and allied families announce with deep sorrow the passing of their beloved daughter, Mrs Mawuena Trebarh (nee Dumor). She passed in the evening of Wednesday, 10th April 2024 after a recent period of illness.
“Funeral announcements will be announced in due time,” the statement said.
The family has also requested privacy during this difficult time.
“The family requests utmost privacy at this time,” it added.
Mawuena Trebarh, sister to the late Komla Dumor of BBC fame, leaves behind a legacy cherished by her family, friends, and community.
Mawuena’s professional journey was marked by significant achievements. Notably, she held the distinction of being the first female CEO of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC). Additionally, she broke barriers as the first female underground exploration geologist in the Ashanti Region, amidst a predominantly male workforce.
Born in April 1971 in Ghana, Mawuena pursued her education at the University of Jos in Plateau State, Nigeria, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Mining. She later obtained an MBA in Management and Strategic Planning from the McCallum Graduate School of Business, Bentley College, Waltham, Massachusetts.
Throughout her career, Mawuena held key roles in various organizations, demonstrating her expertise and leadership qualities. She served as Corporate Services Executive at MTN Ghana, overseeing corporate communications, government and regulatory relations, legal matters, and company secretarial duties. Furthermore, she played a pivotal role in communications strategies for Newmont Ghana Ltd, contributing significantly to the development of gold deposits in Ghana and other African nations.
During her tenure as CEO of GIPC, Mawuena again achieved notable successes, including attracting foreign direct investment into Ghana and substantially increasing the Centre’s revenue.
Her strategic vision and commitment to excellence earned her widespread acclaim and respect in the business community.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mawuena was a staunch advocate for gender equality and empowerment. She utilized her platform to advocate for increased female representation in the workforce and advocated for changes to business practices in Ghana.
In 2020, Mawuena was appointed as the deputy spokesperson for the John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Election 2020 Campaign. She also served as the spokesperson and Head of Communications for the office of the vice presidential candidate, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Mawuena Trebarh passed away at the age of 52, leaving behind a profound legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
