The largest opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nationwide demonstration dubbed “Democracy Under Attack” is underway as Ghana simultaneously holds a national interfaith memorial service for the eight people who lost their lives in the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.
Clad in red and black, hundreds of party supporters have gathered at the Supreme Court in Accra, waving party flags and carrying placards bearing the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow and #SayNoToStateCapture as they march towards the Jubilee House.
According to the NPP, the protest is intended to draw attention to what it describes as growing threats to Ghana’s democratic governance, including alleged restrictions on free expression, the treatment of opposition voices and concerns over the independence of key state institutions.
The party maintains that the demonstration is aimed at defending civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability.
The protest is taking place at the same time President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, government officials, families of the deceased and other mourners are attending a national interfaith memorial service at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) to mark the first anniversary of the helicopter crash.
