The Offinso North District Assembly has begun work on a six-unit classroom block at Tontokrom, near Akumadan. The project is aimed at ending years of hardship for schoolchildren who walk long distances to access education.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Ceasar Ofosu Acheampong, on Friday, June 12, 2025, together with Nananom from the Akumadan Palace and party executives, cut the sod for the construction of the six-unit classroom block at Tontokrom in the Offinso North District.
For years, Tontokrom has lacked a school, forcing children from the community to travel several kilometres to Akumadan for basic education, often along poor and unsafe roads.
Community members say the situation has led to children missing early morning classes, arriving at school fatigued, and in some cases suffering accidents. Some victims have sustained injuries leading to amputation, while others have died.
Addressing Nananom and residents at a brief ceremony to commence the project, Hon. Ceasar Ofosu Acheampong said the initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to fulfilling its campaign promises and expanding access to education.
“Last year, we made several commitments regarding education in our district, which we provided updates on during our recent accountability series. Today, we are here to start a six-unit classroom block comprising a headmaster’s office, a teachers’ staff room and a storeroom for the people of Tontokrom, to be completed within the next six months,” he stated.
“This, among other things, is part of your share of the national cake and a legacy of voting the NDC into power,” he declared.
Hon. Ceasar Ofosu Acheampong further acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting the people of Tontokrom and urged them to exercise patience, assuring them that the Assembly remains committed to addressing their concerns one after the other.
Nana Kwaku Boateng, Gyaasehene of Akumadan, expressed profound gratitude on behalf of Nana Boakye Akuamoah Boateng II, the Akumadanhene, and the residents of the Tontokrom community.
He urged the DCE to remain focused on his development vision for Akumadan and its surrounding communities, without paying attention to detractors.
“When good things like this begin, some people gossip recklessly, wishing that it would not happen. I pray that God turns them into optimists. I appeal to the DCE and his team to ignore such people and rather focus on what God wants them to do for the good people of Akumadan and its environs,” the Gyaasehene admonished after pouring libation to pacify the gods for the successful execution of the project.
The DCE said the project marks a new chapter for Tontokrom and reaffirms the government’s pledge to improve education infrastructure in deprived communities. Once completed, the classroom block is expected to serve hundreds of pupils in the area, save lives and help improve literacy rates.
The Tontokrom project, awarded to Qualcon Construction Limited, becomes the third educational infrastructure project in the district, following similar projects currently being executed in Bosomponso and Nkenkaanso, as well as the massive renovation and completion of over 10 other school infrastructure projects across the district.
