The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has broken his silence following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries, firmly defending his long-standing friendship with former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.
According to the Effutu MP, his loyalty to Kennedy Agyapong remains intact, explaining that their relationship is founded on trust that goes beyond political competition.
“In all situations, loyalty to friendship is very essential… My relationship with him [Kennedy Agyapong] remains unsoiled till time shall be no more — but our party comes first,” – Afenyo-Markin said.
He made the remarks while addressing party members during an Effutu NPP Stakeholders Engagement on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
The Minority Leader explained that loyalty to friendship is a principle he holds sacred and does not abandon simply because of political competition.
“A man must not forget his friend because there is everything wrong with betraying a friend,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that Kennedy Agyapong contested the party’s presidential primaries but insisted that the contest did not diminish the mutual respect and trust they share.
In the Effutu Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong recorded a landslide victory in the primaries, polling 644 votes, while Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secured 79 votes. Dr Bryan Acheampong polled 32 votes, Kwabena Agyapong recorded two votes, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum polled zero.
Despite the outcome of the contest, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the shared values between himself and Kennedy Agyapong guided their conduct after the primaries.
He disclosed that, in a show of goodwill and commitment to party unity, Kennedy Agyapong reached out to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia after the primaries.
“I am happy to inform you that yesterday, without any prompting, he spoke with our flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. It was a short but hearty conversation, and he gave his commitment to support Dr Bawumia to win the 2028 election,” Mr Afenyo-Markin revealed.
According to the Minority Leader, the gesture demonstrated Kennedy Agyapong’s maturity, loyalty to the party, and readiness to work with all stakeholders despite the outcome of the primaries.
Mr Afenyo-Markin’s comments come amid public criticism and social media speculation following the primaries, particularly from his constituency, where Kennedy Agyapong overwhelmingly won the vote.
