53 Nigerians Arrested, 44 Rescued as Security Agencies Bust Cybercrime Syndicate in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, Tuba

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals and the rescue of 44 others following coordinated security operations targeting suspected cybercrime centres in parts of Accra.

According to him, the operations were carried out over the last 48 hours based on intelligence led by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), which identified several locations in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba where young men were allegedly being exploited and coerced by cybercrime kingpins to engage in illegal online activities.

Acting on the CSA-led intelligence, a joint team comprising operatives from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the National Police SWAT conducted coordinated raids at the identified centres on January 16 and 17, 2026.

Taking to his social media handles, Sam George disclosed that 44 of the suspects are believed to be victims of trafficking and exploitation. The victims were found operating laptop computers in their respective apartments at the time of the operation.

Searches conducted at the various locations led to the retrieval of 52 assorted mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

In total, 53 Nigerian nationals were arrested across the five locations, with five arrests recorded at East Legon Hills, 11 at Afienya, 10 at Kwabenya, 10 at Weija, and 17 at Tuba.

Mr. George stated that all the arrested persons have been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping and further investigations. He cautioned foreign nationals seeking opportunities in Ghana to verify claims made by compatriots who may attempt to lure them into the country under false pretences.

He further revealed that individuals picked up during previous related operations have been profiled by the Ghana Immigration Service and INTERPOL, with some handed over to Nigerian law enforcement authorities at the Seme border, while others are currently facing prosecution before the law courts.

The Minister stressed that protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable, commending the Cyber Security Authority and partner law enforcement agencies for the successful operation.
