The government has announced that the Constitution Day public holiday, which falls on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, will instead be observed on Friday, January 9, giving Ghanaians a long weekend.
A statement from the Ministry of the Interior explained that although Constitution Day falls on Wednesday, January 7, the President, John Dramani Mahama, has exercised his authority through an Executive Instrument to move the public holiday to Friday to allow for wider national observance.
The statement signed by the Interior Minister, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the decision was taken in line with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended.
Constitution Day marks the promulgation of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which came into force on January 7, 1993, ushering in the Fourth Republic.
