Eight communities in the Afadzato South District have been celebrated for achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status at a colourful ceremony held on Tuesday at Nyagbo Agodome.
The event, organised by the Afadzato South District Assembly, was held under the theme “We Will Always Need a Toilet.”
Speaking at the ceremony, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, commended the communities for their commitment to improved sanitation practices. He emphasised that maintaining good sanitation is a lifelong responsibility essential for public health, human dignity, and sustainable development.
Hon. Gunu affirmed the government’s commitment to H.E. John Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, which prioritises health, environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods. He stressed that improved sanitation is central to environmental health and community well-being.
Stella Kumedzro, the Regional Environmental Health Officer (REHO), expressed concern that only 25% of Ghanaians currently have access to basic sanitation services, while 18% still engage in open defecation. She urged broader community participation to help reverse the trend and accelerate progress in the region.
The Afadzato South District was praised for its effective implementation of the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach, which has empowered households and community leaders to take ownership of their sanitation needs. Traditional authorities, assembly members, and residents were recognised for their collective efforts that made the ODF achievement possible.
Madam Kumedzro further called for a united regional effort to attain full ODF status within the next five years, urging communities to reduce dependence on public toilets and invest in household toilet facilities.
The ceremony also saw the presentation of awards and certificates to the newly declared ODF communities in recognition of their dedication to ending open defecation. Officials used the platform to promote the National Sanitation Day initiative, encouraging residents to participate in monthly clean-up exercises and adopt proper waste management practices.
District authorities appealed to all landlords to construct household toilets to help safeguard public health and secure a cleaner future for the Afadzato South District.
