The 2025 edition of National Farmers’ Day kicks off today at the Ho Sports Stadium, with the nation’s farmers and fishers set to be honoured under the banner of the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”
The event marks the climax of a five-day-long Agricultural Fair that has drawn hundreds of stakeholders from across the country, including agripreneurs, researchers, investors, and policymakers for exhibitions, technology demonstrations, and networking.
At the centre of today’s Grand Durbar and Awards Ceremony will be John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, alongside the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, and other leading figures in the sector.
The theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future” speaks to the government’s renewed commitment to strengthening Ghana’s food security, promoting local production and consumption, reducing dependence on food imports, and creating sustainable agri-business opportunities.
The five-day Agricultural Fair, which opened on Monday, December 1, has served as a robust platform for showcasing innovations and improvements in agriculture from modern machinery and irrigation systems to research outputs, agro-processing, digital farming, livestock management and fisheries.
Stakeholders from within and outside the sector used the fair to form new partnerships, explore business opportunities, and exchange ideas aimed at boosting agribusiness across Ghana.
As is tradition, the 41st National Farmers’ Day will honour outstanding farmers, fishers, and agribusiness actors across a broad range of categories reflecting the diversity of Ghana’s agricultural sector. Awards will be presented for Best Farmer, Best Crop Farmer, Best Livestock Farmer, Best Youth Farmer, Best Female Farmer, and Best Physically Challenged Farmer, among others. Outstanding performers in agro-processing, fisheries, cocoa, coffee, shea nut picking, and digital agriculture will also be recognised. Regional and district-level awards will highlight the efforts of local farmers and extension agents across the country.
The awards system serves not only to recognise excellence and hard work, but also to motivate innovation and encourage the youth, women, and persons with disabilities to actively engage in agriculture and agribusiness, transforming farming into a viable, dignified, and sustainable career path for all.
With the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” this year’s Farmers’ Day carries a clear call to action:
Feed Ghana: ramp up local production through modern farming practices, mechanisation, improved inputs and climate-resilient agriculture.
Eat Ghana: encourage Ghanaians to prioritise locally produced food, reducing import dependence and strengthening domestic food systems.
Secure the Future, build a sustainable, resilient agricultural sector that ensures food security, job creation, and economic growth for future generations.
By hosting the celebrations in the Volta Region, a region with a rich agricultural heritage, the government signals its commitment to inclusive, region-balanced development and recognition of the vital contributions of all farming communities.
As thousands gather today at the Ho Sports Stadium for the Grand Durbar and Awards Ceremony, the hope is that the celebration will not only honour Ghana’s “food heroes,” but also galvanise collective resolve to transform agriculture into a sustainable cornerstone of national development.
