Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, nominee for the position of Chief Justice of Ghana, is appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, Monday, November 10, 2025, for his public vetting. The exercise is taking place at 11:00 a.m. in Committee Rooms 1 and 2 of Parliament House.
His nomination was formally referred to the Committee on October 21, 2025, after the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin presented the President’s correspondence to the House.
The process leading to today’s vetting was not without controversy. The Minority Caucus initially vowed to block the vetting and consideration of the nomination of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who is currently serving as Acting Chief Justice, until all legal actions filed by the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, are concluded.
But the Speaker disagreed, saying there was neither a constitutional nor procedural foundation to justify halting the vetting process due to ongoing court proceedings.
“There is no constitutional or standing order basis for Parliament to halt the process simply because there are pending cases in court. Should I accept that argument, it would mean that any litigant could hold Parliament hostage by filing a case and freezing the work of Parliament and its committees. The motion is inadmissible and has been returned to the sponsor, the Minority Leader, Honourable Alexander Afenyo-Markin.”
In his letter to Parliament, President Mahama commended Justice Baffoe-Bonnie for his integrity, professionalism, and decades of service to the judiciary. He noted that the nominee’s sound judicial temperament, fairness, and administrative competence make him well-suited to lead the judiciary.
