‘Somebody left soup on fire and went to church’ – GNFS reveals cause of Achimota fire disaster

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has identified the cause of the fire outbreak at Achimota Abofu, which destroyed several commercial shops selling assorted drinks on Sunday, August 9, 2025.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the service stated that the fire started due to negligence.

The report indicated that the Accra Regional Fire Commander, ACFO Rashid Kwame Nisawu, in an interview, disclosed that the fire was caused by an individual who left food on fire and went to church.

“The fire started from one of the containers, and it’s a straightforward story: somebody left soup on fire and went to church. I don’t want to mention the person’s name for security reasons,” he added.

ACFO Kwame Nisawu cautioned Ghanaians against cooking at their marketplaces and shops.

“These things we have been saying—that they should not be cooking in the markets and shops—some of them have not been listening to the advice, and that is what has happened,” he said.

The fire outbreak at the Abofu Junction in the Achimota area of Accra left several shops affected and properties worth thousands of cedis destroyed.

Several shops were torched down by raging fire at Achimota.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire outbreak started from the shops near the Shell Filling Station and adjacent to the Ghana Media School, where about seven shops on the stretch were caught in the blaze, even as the fire continued to rage.

Videos sighted by GhanaWeb showed thick black plumes of smoke billowing into the sky while people watched helplessly.

At the time of filing this report, the Ghana Fire Service had responded to the fire, with the presence of police and NADMO officials at the venue, according to GhanaWeb’s Patience Adu.
