PHOTOS: Oguaa Queenmother Nana Ekua Abookye VI Leads 2025 Fetu Afahye Cooking Festival, Champions Childhood Cancer Awareness

The Paramount Queenmother of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Nana Ekua Abookye VI, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, led this year’s annual cooking festival as part of the Women’s Day Celebration during the 61st Oguaa Fetu Afahye.

Held at Chapel Square in Cape Coast, the cooking contest, organised under her auspices, went beyond its traditional cultural spectacle to shine a spotlight on Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM).

With the theme “Bridging Gaps: Saving Lives!”, the Omanhemaa used the festival as a platform to call attention to the importance of early detection and treatment of childhood cancers.

This year’s competition, which usually features identifiable women’s groups, brought together teams from the security services — Fire Service, Prison Service, and Police Service — as well as selected masquerade groups. Their culinary skills thrilled the audience while carrying a deeper message of hope for children battling cancer.

In partnership with World Child Cancer, the Ministry of Health, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana Health Service, and international partners, the Omanhemaa stressed that cultural festivals such as the Fetu Afahye must also serve as platforms for education, advocacy, and saving lives.
