NADMO Engages Keta Fisherfolk in Climate Education to Combat Rising Sea Levels

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in a decisive move to safeguard coastal livelihoods from the escalating impacts of climate change, has carried out an extensive educational outreach programme targeting fisherfolk and residents in Keta.

The initiative aimed at equipping communities with knowledge and strategies to address the threat posed by rising sea levels.

The outreach, which took place in several low-lying communities along the Keta coastline, is part of NADMO’s broader community-based disaster risk reduction campaign.

NADMO Officers educated fisherfolk on practical measures to protect vital livelihood tools such as fishing nets, canoes, and outboard motors from damage caused by flooding, coastal erosion, and tidal surges.

Participants were also briefed on how to spot early warning signs of environmental changes and how to respond swiftly in the event of extreme weather events.

Community members were advised to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting unusual environmental occurrences to local authorities. The session placed a strong emphasis on collaboration, with NADMO officers encouraging residents to work together in preparing for and responding to climate-related emergencies.

The sensitisation exercise was warmly received by the local population, with many expressing gratitude for the timely intervention. Residents voiced their commitment to implementing the recommended safety measures, acknowledging the increasing vulnerability of their homes and livelihoods to sea-level rise.

This latest effort by NADMO reflects its ongoing dedication to strengthening community resilience across Ghana’s coastline, particularly in climate-sensitive areas like Keta.

It also reinforces the crucial role of public education in enhancing national preparedness and adaptation to the evolving challenges of climate change.
