The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in a commendable display of community action and disaster preparedness, in collaboration with the Assembly Member for Keta Central and residents of the area, spearheaded a major flood prevention initiative.
The exercise, which focused on improving water drainage in flood-prone parts of Keta Central, involved the clearing and creation of water channels to allow stagnant floodwaters to flow into nearby lagoons.
This practical intervention is expected to significantly reduce water accumulation in the area and mitigate the risk of future flooding.
Officers from Keta NADMO worked closely with local leaders and community members, underscoring the importance of grassroots involvement in disaster risk reduction. The initiative not only highlights NADMO’s commitment to proactive disaster management but also sets an example for other communities within the Keta Municipality.
Authorities have praised the collaborative effort and are urging other towns and communities in the municipality to emulate the approach. By adopting similar preventative measures, they say, lives and property can be better protected from the adverse impacts of flooding.
The effort forms part of NADMO’s broader strategy to enhance community resilience in the face of increasingly unpredictable climate and weather patterns, especially along Ghana’s vulnerable coastal belt.
