The Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has dismissed claims that he deliberately ignored a Minority-led protest at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following the arrest of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Describing the allegations as “pure mischief,” the lawmaker believes the accusations are politically motivated and grounded in false assumptions.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps on Monday, June 18, 2025, Patrick Boamah clarified that he was completely unaware of the planned protest and only found out about it after seeing the footage on television.
“The protest wasn’t pre-arranged or communicated to us. I was just as surprised as anyone else watching it on TV,” he stated.
He explained that earlier that day, the Minority held a caucus meeting, during which no mention was made of any protest activity.
“Our Minority Leader was out of the country on ECOWAS duties, and our Deputy Leader delivered our position on the floor. I was in the Chamber the entire time. I can even show you my chat history with the Chief Whip from that evening,” he added.
Mr Boamah suggested that the protest was a spontaneous action by a few members, as many MPs were occupied with official duties at the time.
“So why am I being singled out? Perhaps someone has a personal issue with me. But that’s politics—people will always look for ways to be mischievous,” he said.
He also referenced past incidents in which his absence was unfairly criticised, including the vetting of MPs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Samuel Nartey George, during which he was officially attending a scheduled meeting in South Africa.
“Yet I was present at the Chief Justice demonstration, and even visited Reverend John Ntim Fordjour’s home. But those are never mentioned. That’s just the nature of politics,” Boamah emphasised.
