NPP General Secretary Frimpong Kodua Moves to Block Buttey as Acting Chair as Ntim’s Health Worsens

Fresh reports emerging from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) indicate a deepening internal rift within the party’s national leadership, as General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua is alleged to have convened a secret meeting with some Regional Chairmen to plot the removal of the First National Vice Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey.

According to credible sources, the meeting reportedly took place around midnight on Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Accra and was chaired by Mr. Kodua himself. At least 12 Regional Chairmen were said to have been present, but intelligence suggests that only four expressed support for the purported plan to pass a vote of no confidence in Chairman Buttey. The remaining eight reportedly declined to be part of what some described as a “divisive agenda.”

The alleged plan is to accuse Mr. Buttey of making disparaging remarks about the national leadership of the party on a radio programme, specifically claiming that all current executives have failed and must resign. Insiders say this claim will be used as the basis for a no-confidence vote at an upcoming National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 17.

Further allegations suggest that Mr. Kodua is uneasy about the prospect of Chairman Buttey assuming the role of Acting National Chairman, given the prolonged ill health of Chairman Stephen Ntim. Sources claim that Mr. Kodua had earlier attempted to suppress news of Chairman Ntim’s medical condition, but this was thwarted after the Ntim family publicly cautioned party members against politicising his health.

It is also alleged that Mr. Kodua encouraged some members of the NPP’s UK branch to submit a petition calling for the suspension of Chairman Buttey—another move insiders say failed to gain traction.

Party insiders believe that Mr. Kodua’s actions are motivated by his desire to maintain control over key party structures, particularly in anticipation of the next round of internal elections. Sources within the party allege that the General Secretary is seeking to influence changes to the party’s database management software and manipulate the electoral album, a critical tool in determining delegate eligibility.

Additionally, there are accusations that Mr. Kodua has raised significant funds in the name of the party without providing adequate accountability to party leadership. It is claimed that he frequently cites the National Chairman’s supposed approval to justify his actions—a claim that Chairman Buttey is unlikely to endorse, thereby positioning him as a perceived threat to Kodua’s authority.

The development has triggered anxiety among some party faithful, with growing concerns that the internal tensions could harm party unity ahead of the crucial 2024 general elections.

This is a developing story. More updates will be provided as further details emerge.
