Volta Regional Minister Leads Efforts to Revive Abandoned Vakpo Pack House for Agricultural Transformation

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has reaffirmed the region’s commitment to agricultural development following a working visit to the abandoned Vakpo Pack House facility in the North Dayi District.

Joined by the Volta Regional Director of Agriculture, William Dzamefe, and other key officials, the Minister toured the facility to assess its current state and discuss prospects for its revival.

The facility, constructed in 2013 with two packing lines dedicated to pineapple and mango processing, was once hailed as a game-changer for agro-processing and employment in the region.

Despite its potential, the Vakpo Pack House has remained largely unused since a final test run in 2016. Out of the 648 acres of land allocated for its operations, less than 100 acres were ever developed before the site fell into disuse. Years of neglect have left the facility in a deteriorated state, raising concerns among stakeholders about the underutilization of such a critical agricultural asset.

Mr. Gunu expressed concern over the missed opportunities and underscored the urgent need for action.

“As a region committed to agricultural transformation, we are taking steps to explore how this valuable asset can be revived to support farmers, create jobs, and drive economic growth in our communities.”

The Regional Minister noted that revamping the facility would not only breathe new life into the agricultural value chain but also serve as a strategic pillar in the government’s broader agenda for industrialisation and youth employment.

Hon Gunu called for a coordinated effort among stakeholders, including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the private sector, and development partners, to assess the facility’s current state and chart a viable path toward its full operationalisation.

The visit is expected to catalyse new conversations and planning around the rehabilitation of the Vakpo Pack House, potentially turning it into a model for sustainable agro-industrial development in the region.
