Bank of Ghana to Commemorate 60 Years of the Cedi with Nationwide Celebrations

The Bank of Ghana has announced plans to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Cedi, Ghana’s national currency, with a series of nationwide events spanning from July to December 2025.

In a statement issued on 13th May 2025 and signed by the Secretary of the Bank, Sandra Thompson, the central bank disclosed that the celebration, dubbed Cedi@60, marks six decades since the Cedi replaced the Ghanaian Pound as Ghana’s sole legal tender on 19th July 1965. This milestone reflects the country’s economic journey and its quest for sovereignty, stability, and growth.

“The Cedi has remained a strong symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty and development,” the statement said.

Over the years, the currency has undergone significant reforms and policy adjustments to keep pace with the evolving demands of the national economy. These changes, according to the Bank, are a testament to Ghana’s tenacity, innovation, and resilience.

To mark the historic occasion, the Bank of Ghana will roll out a variety of activities including official launch ceremonies, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder forums. These events are designed to engage the public and deepen appreciation for the Cedi’s role in Ghana’s economic development.

“This anniversary offers an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the history of the Cedi, to celebrate the progress made, and to reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect the value and integrity of the currency,” the statement added.

The Bank also emphasized the symbolic importance of the Cedi, noting that beyond its role as a medium of exchange, it represents national pride, heritage, and aspirations for a prosperous future.

The Bank of Ghana has extended an open invitation to the public, institutions, organisations, stakeholders and development partners to participate in the commemorative events. Full details of the programme lineup will be announced in the coming weeks.

The statement reaffirmed the Bank’s ongoing commitment to ensuring a stable Cedi and maintaining price stability as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic policy.
