The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has issued a strong call for constitutional adherence, judicial independence, and urgent national reforms during its 2025 Mid-Year Conference held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.
In a resolution passed on Saturday, April 26, the Association called for the immediate revocation of the suspension of the Chief Justice, describing it as unconstitutional and lacking the necessary regulatory backing as required under Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution. The GBA urged the President to release the full decision establishing a prima facie case against the Chief Justice and to enact clear regulations to guide such processes in future.
The Bar further condemned politically charged commentary on judicial matters, warning against any attempts to undermine the authority and independence of the Judiciary. It vowed to defend the judicial process against any undue interference.
On matters affecting justice delivery, the GBA requested the withdrawal of a recent directive by the Acting Chief Justice concerning the assignment of cases. It instead urged the Judiciary to enhance the use of technology to promote fairness and efficiency in the administration of justice.
Addressing broader national concerns, the GBA took a firm stance against illegal mining, or galamsey, labelling it a dire threat to Ghana’s environment, water sources, and public health. The Association called on the Judiciary to expedite galamsey-related cases and demanded stronger government action to combat the menace.
In relation to the ongoing conflict in Bawku, the Association expressed grave concern and commended traditional rulers, particularly the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for their peace efforts. It pledged its support for mediation initiatives and committed to using its influence to advocate for lasting peace.
The GBA also addressed the unresolved Ablekuma North Parliamentary Elections, urging the Electoral Commission and security agencies to conclude the collation and declaration of results to restore representation and uphold the democratic rights of constituents.
The resolutions, signed by Mrs. Efua Ghartey, National President, and Mr. Kwaku Gyau Baffour, National Secretary, underscore the Association’s role in promoting justice, good governance, and the rule of law.
