The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has sounded the alarm over the growing threat of illegal mining across the country, commonly referred to as galamsey.
Addressing Regional Police Commanders at a high-level conference on Friday, March 21, 2025, COP Yohuno expressed grave concern about the lawlessness associated with illegal mining operations, particularly attacks on innocent civilians and forest guards by those involved in the activity.
“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue. We are declaring war on illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action, to bring perpetrators to justice,” he stated.
He also stressed the urgent need for intensified policing to curb the menace, emphasizing its devastating impact on the environment and public safety.
