The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, welcomed the executives of the E-Sports Federation to his office on Friday, February 28, 2025, to discuss the introduction, promotion, and development of the sport in Ghana and beyond.
In his welcome remarks, Mr Adams indicated the Ministry’s readiness to work with every sporting discipline across the country, noting that the Ministry does not discriminate against any sport.
The Minister stated that the world is moving towards electronic participation in sports, and Ghana cannot afford to be left behind. He stressed his commitment to ensuring the growth and sustenance of the sport.
He advised the executives to guard against any form of cyberattack that could harm the sport, adding that they must do everything possible to protect it. He pledged to work with them to make e-sports a household name in Ghana and beyond.
The Minister underscored the need for the E-Sports Federation to position itself to take advantage of the opportunities available in the sports ecosystem. He added that research has shown that over $1 trillion is available for sports development and expressed confidence that the federation has the capacity and ability to benefit from it.
According to the Minister, the Sports and Recreation Ministry is in the process of reviewing the Sports Act and will solicit the ideas, views, and contributions of e-sports and other stakeholders to finalize the bill.
The President of the E-Sports Federation, Mr. Igor Boumekpo, congratulated the Minister on his appointment and used the opportunity to introduce the executive members to him.
He noted that the E-Sports Federation was officially recognized by the National Sports Authority in 2024 and has so far organized several tournaments and competitions at both national and international levels to help develop the sport.
He affirmed his commitment to the development of the sport and assured the Minister of his support and collaboration to realize its growth.
He further appealed for the Minister’s support in establishing regional e-sports centers across all 16 regions to aid in the diversification and expansion of the sport across the country.
