The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has launched a scathing attack on Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of exhibiting disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour towards the Clerk to the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Madam Gifty Jiagge Gobah.
This comes after the Effutu MP accused the Clerk of extreme partisanship following a violent altercation between the Majority and Minority caucuses.
Speaking to journalists, Afenyo-Markin directly accused the Clerk, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, of favouring the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“You this clerk, is that the way a civil servant should behave? It’s a shame on you. You this clerk, if you want to destroy Parliament, we won’t spare you,” he fumed.
He added, “… you this partisan clerk, when I was the Majority Leader, you insisted for the presence of the Minority but today, you call for a meeting without us. You think we are going to be quiet? Shame on you.”
But in a strongly worded social media post on Sunday, February 2, 2025, the Communications Minister-designate described Afenyo-Markin’s conduct as “despicable.”
In his condemnation, Sam George also questioned whether Afenyo-Markin would have acted in the same manner if the Clerk had been male and characterized the Minority Leader’s behaviour as both misogynistic and narcissistic.
“This shameful behaviour is unbecoming of a Leader of the august House. I am absolutely certain he would not have dared to do this to a male Clerk of Parliament. Madam Gifty Gobah has been a staff of Parliament for 18 years and deserves the respect her office commands. Such misogynistic and narcissistic behaviour must be roundly condemned by all well-meaning members of society and Parliament itself.”
The Ningo-Prampram MP further urged the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to formally raise the matter with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin.
“After the House has passed the Affirmative Action Law, we cannot condone and be complicit in such uncouth behaviour. Madam Gifty Jiagge Gobah, I and many more decent people stand with you. Be encouraged and stand strong with your head held high. Your poise and composure even when you were under the barrage of insults is remarkable. Such a role model for our daughters,” portions of the post read.
