A Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Asare, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misleading its supporters regarding alleged unresolved discrepancies in the provisional voter’s register.
Speaking to Accra-based Joy News on Saturday, September 14, 2024, Dr Asare stated that the NDC is exaggerating problems with the register that do not exist, stressing that the issues they are protesting over have already been addressed.
“We at the Electoral Commission think that the NDC leadership who have taken the route of demonstration is misinforming their people. They seem to be exaggerating problems in the register which are non-existent.”
“The Commission has made it very clear openly to the NDC, openly to the good people of Ghana, international partners that we have a register that is robust, that is credible,” he said.
In response to concerns about trust in the EC, particularly in comparison to the 2016 elections, Dr Asare indicated that the voter register used in 2016 had more significant issues than the current one, yet the NDC did not raise serious objections at the time.
“We were trying to make the point that even in the 2016 register, there were more problems than what we are talking about now, but the NDC didn’t raise any serious issues then,” he added.
Dr. Asare invited the NDC and all other political parties to engage in discussions with the EC to resolve any remaining concerns and ensure peaceful and credible elections in the upcoming December 7 general polls.
The leadership of the NDC has raised concerns about the provisional voter’s register, pointing out discrepancies that they claim to have uncovered. However, their request for a forensic audit has not been granted by the Electoral Commission.
