The Minority side of Parliament was thrown into ecstasy and jubilant moods on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, as news of the acquittal and discharge of their leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson started trickling in.
Amid songs of praise and waving white handkerchiefs, the NDC MPs heartily cheered the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam MP as he walked into the hallowed chambers of the House after a Court of Appeal reached a majority 2-1 verdict in his favour.
Dr. Ato Forson together with a businessman, Richard Jakpa were in court on charges of willfully causing financial loss to the state and intentionally misapplying public property. After years of legal proceedings, the Court of Appeal acquitted and discharged Dr Forson, the first accused, and Richard Jakpa, the third accused, on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
For his colleagues in Parliament, particularly those on the Minority side, this decision was a source of immense relief and celebration. Their boycott of parliamentary proceedings on days when their leader appeared in court, in protest, now comes to an end. Additionally, the ruling confirmed their long-held belief in the innocence of Dr. Ato Forson.
During today’s proceedings, a visibly relieved Minority Leader received a standing ovation from the NDC MPs, who stood and sang the popular ‘Daa n’ase’ in harmony, waving white handkerchiefs in praise.
Although it was a brief moment, it had a profound impact on Dr Forson, who nodded in appreciation of the faith his colleagues had in him. In response to his acquittal, he quoted Romans 9:14 from the Bible: “What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!”
