President Akufo-Addo has reiterated for the umpteenth time that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has had a terrible impact on the economies of Ghana and the rest of Africa.
According to him, the war has been detrimental to African economies, living standards, and inflation, and noted Ghana’s interest in contributing to efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.
Speaking at the end of the Global Peace Summit, Akufo-Addo remarked, “We are against this idea of colonialism, of domination in the world, but in this context, we look at Russian aggression in Ukraine. The consequences of this aggression go far beyond the conflict. Africa became an accidental victim of this conflict, supply chains were disrupted.”
He elaborated on the economic repercussions, saying, “This has had a terrible impact on our economies, on living standards, on high inflation. Food prices have skyrocketed and these are some of the consequences of the invasion and so we have an interest in participating in efforts to find a solution to this conflict.”
He also stressed the need for a comprehensive resolution, stating, “A solution to the conflict must be based on a comprehensive, just, lasting peace based on the principles of international law and the UN Charter.”
He further highlighted the importance of engaging major global players in the peace process, adding, “It is necessary to find ways to involve Russia and China in the process of ending the war.”
During the second plenary session of the Global Peace Summit, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the participants’ efforts, saying they had made the right choice in focusing on two security and one humanitarian item to begin moving towards restoring full security and achieving a just peace. Zelenskyy noted that the dialogue held at the summit demonstrated the potential for very practical outcomes.
