A political ‘tsunami’ hit the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries on Saturday, January 27, causing major upsets for several incumbents.
In a major upset, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, a third-term MP, was ousted in the Tano North constituency. Her challenger Dr. Gideon Boako who doubles as the spokesperson for the Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured a decisive victory with 444 votes against Prempeh’s 221.
Dome-Kwabenya witnessed a stunning defeat for Sarah Adwoa Safo. Despite a public apology for her long absence from the country last year, the delegates chose Mike Ocquaye Jr. over her.
In the Abuakwa North constituency, there was a change of guard as incumbent Gifty Twum-Ampofo narrowly lost to Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong, popularly known as “Buffalo,” who garnered 222 votes compared to Twum-Ampofo’s 202.
Deputy Minister of Health, Tina Gifty Mensah, faced an unexpected defeat in the Weija Gbawe constituency, losing to the CEO of the Coastal Development Authority, Jerry Ahmed Shuaib, who polled 786 votes to Mensah’s 361.
