Akim Swedru: Controller and Accountant General loses NPP parliamentary primary

The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, faced disappointment as he lost the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in the Akim Swedru constituency in the Eastern region.

The incumbent MP, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, emerged victorious with a significant lead, securing 194 votes, while Mr Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem garnered a paltry 94 votes. Okyere Jerome Kwame polled 10 votes in the closely watched race.

The contest gained attention when the Controller and Accountant General declared his intention to vie for the parliamentary seat. Despite receiving support and endorsements from notable figures such as high-profile personalities, politicians, religious leaders, and civil society organizations, he faced opposition from the incumbent MP who also doubles as the Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament.

Ahead of the polls, some critics called for his resignation or removal from office. The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) Ghana specifically demanded Mr Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem’s immediate removal from office, alleging a breach of the Civil Service Act, PNDC Law 327.

Further complicating matters, on January 10, 2024, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, took legal action by filing a lawsuit against Mr Kwaning-Bosompem. However, Mr Kwaning-Bosompem paid no heed and still contested the polls, culminating in his defeat.
