The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana has lauded former President John Dramani Mahama’s ambitious promise to create a “24-hour economy” as a potential game changer in the country’s efforts to address high youth unemployment rates.
According to the Secretary General of the TUC, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, the move has the potential to bring about a substantial transformation in the country’s employment landscape.
Mahama’s proposal, in essence, entails promoting a work culture that extends beyond traditional business hours and embraces continuous operations, leading to increased job opportunities, enhanced economic productivity, and improved livelihoods. This approach aligns with the changing dynamics of the modern world, where various sectors like information technology, tourism, and services operate 24/7.
The NDC flagbearer met with the TUC on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at the start of his engagement with key stakeholders in a quest to return to power.
Dubbed ‘Building Ghana Tour’, the interactions with the stakeholders are to apprise them of the policies the next NDC administration will implement to transform the economy.
At Tuesday’s engagement, Mr Mahama proposed a 24-hour economy, which will see workers engaged in a three-shift system.
In response, the TUC boss pointed out that the implementation of a 24-hour economy could lead to the creation of numerous job positions across various industries.
“We are also very interested and eager to know more about his great idea of a 24-hour economy. I think this one, Comrade, you have to take your time because I can imagine the amount of jobs that this kind of thing will create. That could be the game-changer. I am telling you. That you have the opportunity in this country to work 24 hours, 3 shifts. So, if you don’t get a job in the morning, you can get it in the afternoon or in the night,” he noted.
