The final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye Naa Dedei Omaedru III will proceed as planned.
This comes after an interim injunction that had temporarily halted the ceremony was overturned by the Accra High Court.
Justice Patrick Baayeh, the High Court judge who had initially granted the order of interim injunction, later acknowledged that this decision was in error.
On Thursday, October 26, he set aside the injunction after an affidavit was submitted in opposition to the earlier ruling.
Justice Baayeh stated, “I am of the view that the Order of Interim Injunction granted on 25th October 2023 was made in error. The Applicants failed to give the Court the true state of affairs.”
“In fairness to the parties, therefore, the Order of Interim Injunction granted on 25th October 2023 is hereby set aside. Any party desirous of proceeding may come on notice to the other party for a proper evaluation of the evidence from both sides.”
The family head of the late Ga Manye and other interested parties had gone to court over the funeral insisting that they had been sidelined by the Ga Traditional Council in the organisation of the ceremony.
In his ruling, Justice Baayeh emphasized that parties involved should proceed with fairness and that the Order of Interim Injunction, which had been granted on October 25, 2023, is hereby nullified. He suggested that any party wishing to continue may do so by notifying the other party for a proper evaluation of the evidence from both sides.
The late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, passed away in December 2022, and a book of condolences was opened and signed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on June 19, 2023. The final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye are expected to take place this weekend.
The Ga Traditional Council had previously issued a directive for all offices and shops in the Central Business District of the Greater Accra Region to be closed for three days, from October 26 to 29. However, in a recent statement, the Council revised this directive and now specifies that offices and businesses should only be closed on Saturday, October 28, and not for the previously announced three-day period.
