“Order from above”: Military personnel offering humanitarian relief services to flood victims reportedly recalled from Mepe

Some military personnel offering humanitarian relief services to victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage have been reportedly recalled from Mepe, in the Volta region.

The officers who were initially deployed to the community which is one of the worst affected areas, were given an ‘order from above’ command on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

The soldiers who were deployed from the Ghana Navy were offering assistance in the area of helping to ferry people and humanitarian aid across the flood waters which have submerged thousands of houses and left more than 5,000 people displaced.

Taking to his social media handle shortly after that order was given, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa questioned the rationale behind such a decision.

“Who “above” has given orders to the military detachment helping us cross flood waters to immediately withdraw when the water levels haven’t receded and when thousands of lives are at stake in camps across these waters? Who in government is behind this utter cruelty?” he quizzed on X (formerly Twitter).

That story was corroborated by one of the morning show hosts of Accra-based TV3, Naa Ashorkor, who was on the ground interviewing victims of the spillage.

“The Millitary have recalled their men on the ground from Mepe. They say they have an order from above to pack up their canoes ( which currently convey relief items from volunteers to the camp sites of displaced persons) and leave immediately,” she also posted on her X (Twitter) handle.
