Micky Darling of Despite media fame was assaulted by an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the Asene Akroso Manso Constituency of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Alex Owusu Adjei and his thugs at the grand Durbar of the chiefs and people of Akim Akroso to climax the celebrations of the 2023 Atwea Festival. The incident which nearly marred the colourful celebrations of the festival shocked high-profile dignitaries and invited guests including the eastern regional minister Hon Seth Kwame Acheampong, the member of Parliament for the Asene Akroso Manso Constituency, Hon George Kwame Aboagye, the District Chief Executive for the area Hon Alexander Kwabena Incoom, Eastern Regional Executives of the NPP let by the 1st Vice Chairman, Hon Dr. Twum Barima, the Constituency Chairman Hon Sampson Kwadwo Effah among others.
Atwea Festival 2023
The Atwea festival is celebrated by the people of the Akyem Akroso traditional area in the month of October every year. This year’s celebration attracted thousands of people both home and abroad with highly patronizing programs and activities making it all the time best. The week-long celebrations started with health walks and medical screening, football competitions, cleaning up exercise, mammoth floats, Artiste Nights, grand durbar and thanksgiving service.
MP’s Support
The member of Parliament for the area Hon George Kwame Aboagye who is an indigene and a royal of the Atweaman stool took an active part in the preparation and the celebration of the festival. As customs demanded the MP donated a big Cattle, assorted drinks and undisclosed cash amounts to Nananom to start the preparations of the festival. The MP supported the organization of a massive float which brought the youth across many of the towns and villages in the constituency together.
Hon George Kwame Aboagye engaged the services of celebrated Ghanaian artists Wendy Shay and Kofi Kinaata to entertain the constituents on the eve of the grand durbar. The two artists entertained the crowd that thronged the premises of Atweaman FM owned by the MP. In attendance were the MP, the DCE, Regional Party executives, constituency Executives, Hon Assembly Members, Nananom and many more from neighbouring districts. During the fundraising activity at the grand Durbar the MP and his DCE again donated assorted drinks and a cash amount of Ghs7,000. The regional minister also donated Ghs10,000 as his support for the developmental projects initiated by the chiefs at Akroso.
Assault Incident
Micky Darling who was the main MC for the program recognized the arrival of the MP, DCE, the regional executives, constituency executives and other party members. After the DCE and the MP of the constituency had spoken Micky Darling was told to introduce the aspiring parliamentary candidate Mr. Alex Owusu Adjei in the middle of the fundraising activity which according to supporters of the aspirant he refused. When the aspirant was given the opportunity to say a few words to the gathering, it turned into political campaigns and self-praising of things he had done for widows. At the end of his speech, Micky Darling humbly requested for his contributions to the fundraising so that he could announce it for the necessary recognition and acknowledgement. This humble request infuriated the aspirant who had no plans of making a donation and a few thugs followed him to assault Micky Darling physically and verbally. It took the timely intervention of the police and the security officers around to bring the situation under control. This behaviour of the aspirants kept the gathering especially the regional minister and the regional executives in shock.
Somebody who is aspiring to lead NPP could be so disrespectful to the regional minister and the regional party in such a manner including not paying homage and showing courtesies was very disappointing, to say the least. Political pundits say whether or not Mr. Alex Owusu Adjei who faced Hon Hawa Koomson in the polling Station and Constituency executive elections in the Awutu Senya East Constituency but was heavily defeated 10-0 and that dazed him to abandon the Kasoa agenda can make any impacts in the 24th February 2024 parliamentary primaries in the Asene Akroso Manso constituency. Time they say will tell.
