The Minority in Parliament has declined the police’s request to consider alternative routes for their upcoming protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his two deputies.
Originally, the Minority had intended to conclude their protest by picketing at the Bank of Ghana on September 5, 2023. However, the police service at a meeting suggested that the NDC MPs modify their route, concluding the march at Independence Square instead.
In a statement, the police clarified that the routes the Minority had chosen could potentially compromise public safety. They also emphasized that the Bank of Ghana’s office is considered a security zone.
Despite this, the Minority MPs have threatened to defy that directive.
In a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Police Command, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority leader dismissed the idea of an alternative route, asserting that it seemed designed to discourage the Caucus from exercising their lawful rights.
“Your attempt to deny us an opportunity to terminate our #OccupyBoG protest at the Headquarters of the Bank of Ghana on the pretext that it is a “security zone” is untenable, troubling and unwholesome for the Ghana Police Service’s motto of Service with Integrity.”
“How is the Bank of Ghana Headquarters designated by the Police as a security zone and the Cedi House, another Bank of Ghana edifice that the Police proposed that we march through not a security zone? I do not want to believe that you are citing or hiding behind a “security zone” to thwart our planned protest and for the Police to shirk its constitutional duty of providing security for persons who desire to publicly manifest their revulsion and abhorrence at the central bank’s reckless management.”
