Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has rallied the presidential aspirants of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite to break the 8 in 2024.
Highlighting the overarching objective of securing victory in the December 2024 elections against the National Democratic Congress, Vice President Bawumia called for unwavering unity among the party leadership ahead of the upcoming main presidential primaries, scheduled for November 4th.
Emerging as the victor in Saturday’s NPP super delegates conference, Dr Bawumia secured a commanding lead with 629 votes, constituting 68.15% of the total valid votes.
Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong secured second place with 132 votes, equivalent to 14.30%, while former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen attained third place with 95 votes, comprising 10.29% of the total.
Speaking from his residence shortly after his victory, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude for the trust vested in him by the party. He emphasized that while this victory marks an initial step towards securing the party’s flagbearership, the ultimate aim remains triumph in the December 2024 elections.
“I am very humbled and very grateful for this election but this is only the first step of winning the flagbearership of the party, so I know that there is work ahead,” Dr Bawumia said, adding “The main event is December 2024, and as we all work together we have to keep in mind that what we are working towards is a win in December 2024.”
Dr Bawumia stressed the importance of bridging any divisions among aspirants, cautioning that disunity could derail the party’s prospects in the 2024 elections.
“This will require a lot of unity amongst ourselves and amongst all the flagbearer hopefuls. It is very important that as we go on this journey towards December 2024, we don’t have cracks in our ranks. We have to all work together and not destroy this very important unity that we have.”
