The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has cracked down on the unregulated operations of tricycles (locally known as “aboboyaa”) and rickshaws (“pragya”) within the Central Business District (CBD) and key streets of Accra.
The unchecked activities of these vehicles have led to severe traffic congestion, disorderly parking, and violations of traffic rules, creating an urgent need for regulations to foster a conducive business environment and enhance traveller comfort.
In response to this issue, the GARCC convened a meeting on Monday, August 14, 2023, where decisive actions were taken.
The council resolved to impose restrictions on the movement of tricycles and rickshaws within the CBD of various municipalities, including Accra Metropolitan, Krowor, Korle Klottey, Tema Metropolitan, La Dade Kotopon, La Nkwantanang Madina, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso West, Ayawaso Central, Ayawaso North, Ledzokuku, Okaikwei North, and Adentan Municipal.
Furthermore, the GARCC reaffirmed a previous ban on the use of tricycles on the Accra-Tema motorway and major thoroughfares across the Greater Accra region.
In addition to addressing vehicular congestion, the GARCC took measures to enhance public order during local festivals. It also prohibited the display of political party paraphernalia during festivals in the region. This includes regulations against hoisting flags and wearing party attires.
To ensure the effective implementation of these resolutions, the GARCC charged all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, along with their Presiding Members, with the responsibility of sensitizing the public and subsequently passing relevant by-laws to enforce these measures.
Here’s the resolution adopted by the GARCC:
