Gyakye Quayson trial: Dormaahene hauled before Judicial Council over commentary

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, the Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area and a High Court judge has come under scrutiny as he faces a probe by the Judicial Council.

The council has summoned him over recent comments he made regarding a case before the courts involving the Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

Speaking at an event organized by the John Evans Atta Mills Heritage in Sunyani, the Dormaahene, also known as Justice Daniel Mensah, called on the Attorney General to file a nolle prosequi in the case of the MP.

His stance was based on the re-election of James Gyakye Quayson, whose election in 2020 was declared unconstitutional by a Supreme Court panel.

The revered chief argued that the subsequent re-election indicated overwhelming support for the MP’s candidature and justified the discontinuation of his prosecution.

Furthermore, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II advocated for an amendment to the existing legal regime, particularly regarding the ineligibility of dual citizens to be elected as Members of Parliament.

However, the chief’s remarks received significant criticism, particularly from pro-government individuals, and have led to an investigation by a committee of the Judicial Council.

The committee, chaired by Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonoo, is tasked with examining the implications of the chief’s statements.

In response to the probe, the largest opposition National Democratic Congress has condemned the actions of the Judicial Council, denouncing it as persecution against the Dormaahene.
