Our political leaders are becoming a nuisance to the citizens of our beloved country. We elect them to serve us. As a nation, we have chosen Democracy as the best system of governance for our political and governance path.
We have our 1992 Constitution as the supreme law of the country. We have three arms of the state that are to function either independently or collaborate to serve us, the population as the Constitution states.
The Executive executes the laws, policies, and programs to fit or benefit the citizens.
The Legislature makes or legislates laws for us. Our legislature consists of 275 members of Parliament.
Their names are prefixed with the title Honourable. Therefore we expect them to act as such. Both the Executive(President) and the Legislature are elected via universal adult suffrage. We have the Judiciary, which is mandated to resolve all disputes; criminal, civil constitutional. It also interprets the laws as passed by Parliament and assented to by the President.
All these categories and other public and civil servants are paid by ordinary taxpayers(citizens). To the politicians, they are provided with security, accommodation, fat allowances, medical care, huge conditions of service, salaries, and wages.
My harmless beef is with the politicians. I see some of them to be ‘problem creators’ instead of problem solvers and they raise unnecessary tension in a peaceful country of ours. Take for instance, the National Democratic Congress Minority in Parliament, they have decided to be boycotting Parliament because some of their colleagues are being prosecuted for allegedly breaching the laws of our country. (Anytime they are to appear in court).
These accused persons are represented by their attorneys or lawyers. The courts do not interfere in the workings of the Executive and Legislature and vice versa. It is thus right for the Executive and Legislature to do the same to the Judiciary. It is sad and wrong for the Minority to hold the nation to ransom.
Their action is negatively affecting the working of the legislature and indirectly affecting national productivity.
After all these clumsy behaviours, the taxpayers will pay them at the end of the month. Their accumulated salaries just for one month can improve the lives of more than two thousand citizens of our country.
If their action is for the love of the country, they should forgo their monthly salaries, so that the money can be used to assist other needy citizens.
Our politicians should also bear in mind that the tables can turn or change. It is good and right to solidarize with a colleague or colleagues but not to the detriment of the innocent citizens or the population who had spent time and energy to cast their votes for you. Our legislators must know that representation is key in their functions.
It is very important to appreciate that a Rule of law is a cardinal trait in any democratic space. No one is above the laws of the country and all are the servants of our laws including the President, the Vice President, the Speaker, and the Chief Justice.
To me, I can state that no condition is permanent in any human endeavour. Both the ruling party and their opposition counterparts must watch out.
Ghana deserves better.
