A massive search and rescue operation is currently underway in Korley Teye in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region after an illegal mining pit caved in on Monday, May 15, 2023.
The incident has so far claimed seven (7) lives and left several others still trapped underground.

Multiple news reports indicate that only five miners out of the suspected 30 who were trapped have so far been rescued alive.
Locals are said to be making frantic efforts with all manner of implements to rescue the others.
The scene of the accident (Takorso site) at Korle Teye, is a busy galamsey site where many of the youth in the surrounding communities troops each day to dig for gold.
