First babies of 2026 born in hospitals across Greater Accra

Several families across Accra welcomed joy in the New Year as the first babies of 2026 were delivered in hospitals in the Greater Accra Region.

At the Oduman Polyclinic in Accra, Georgina and Kweku Amankwaa of Ablekuma welcomed a baby girl, Yaa, born at 0021 hours and weighing 3.1 kilogrammes, making her one of the earliest recorded births in the capital.

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital recorded the delivery of four babies to three mothers within the first minutes of the New Year.

Midwives at the facility told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the births included a set of twins- a boy and a girl- born at 0015 hours to Mrs Brown, as well as two baby girls delivered to two other mothers.

They said the deliveries were conducted through a combination of Caesarean section and vaginal births.

At the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, seven babies were delivered to five mothers in the early hours of the New Year.

Among them were Mr and Mrs Asamoah, who welcomed twins and described the birth as a special New Year gift.

“We have lost over five babies through miscarriages in the last four years. God has lightened up our 2026 and wiped away all our tears with these little bundles of joy,” Mr Asamoah said.

Another new mother, Miss Janet Mensah, aged 22, also expressed gratitude following a safe delivery.
