Police Probe Death of Siano Soccer Academy Player Over Alleged Sexual Abuse

The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the death of a 16-year-old footballer, Ransford Owusu, a junior player of the Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, following allegations of sexual abuse by his coach.

According to a statement signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director-General of Public Affairs, the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is leading the probe into the incident, which reportedly occurred in February 2025.

The deceased’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, told the Amasaman Police that her son had fallen ill and died on February 28, 2025. Before his passing, Ransford allegedly confided in her that he had been sexually abused by his coach, identified as Anyass Ibrahim.

Police investigations led to the arrest of suspect Anyass Ibrahim on November 4, 2025, to assist with inquiries. He was interrogated, his statement taken, and later granted bail to report periodically to the CID Headquarters.

Preliminary medical reports provided by the deceased’s mother from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital (Children’s Hospital) in Kumasi suggest that the young footballer had been treated for liver and kidney-related conditions prior to his death.

The Police say efforts are ongoing to obtain official medical reports from the two health facilities for confirmation, as both institutions had earlier declined formal requests. A court order has since been secured to compel the hospitals to release the necessary medical records.

Meanwhile, the Police have also extended investigations following the emergence of a viral video allegedly showing suspect Ibrahim and a minor in a compromising situation. The statement urged the public to volunteer any credible information that could assist the investigation by contacting the Homicide Unit at the CID Headquarters or the nearest police station.
