Kwasi Joe and Kofi Sam, two of KNUST’s long-standing campus cats, have officially joined the university community under a new initiative aimed at promoting the welfare of resident felines. The University Relations Office (URO), in collaboration with the Quality Assurance and Planning Office (QAPO), launched the Campus Cat Identity Initiative, according to a press release from KNUST.
As part of the program, Kwasi Joe and Kofi Sam, who reside within the Main Administration enclave, have been issued official identification cards under the designation “University Cat.” The IDs display each cat’s name, assigned campus location, care zone, and a symbolic validity period.
“The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen humane animal–campus relations, support environmental health, and enhance the University’s unique cultural identity. The presence of campus cats has long served a role in controlling pests, fostering a calm environment, and offering companionship to students and staff,” the press release noted.

Under the new program, the cats will benefit from a community-supported feeding and veterinary care schedule, coordinated by the URO and designated staff volunteers. The initiative will be rolled out in phases across designated cat zones to ensure regular health checks, maintained feeding points, and educational campaigns on positive human-animal interaction.
According to the KNUST press release, the Campus Cat Identity Initiative not only formally recognises the university’s resident cats but also reinforces a culture of care, responsibility, and harmony between humans and animals on campus.
