Atwima Nwabiagya South: Blow-by-blow account of how police foiled another attack on NPP MP by angry constituents

The grace of God and the swiftness of the Ghana Police Service contributed to saving the Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Emmanuel Agyei Anhwere from angry constituents on Friday, June 23, 2023.

The MP who is no stranger to violent confrontations from his constituents, suffered a similar fate last year when angry youth of some communities in the constituency pounced on him and chased him out of the area over the deplorable roads there.

That scenario nearly unfolded again on Friday when the MP visited the area following the tragic death of 57-year-old John Kwame Asumang, who drowned while attempting to cross a bridge during heavy rainfall.

The intervention of police officers averted a potentially violent situation as angry constituents again confronted the NPP MP.

According to the angry residents, the demise of one of the residents was a result of the poor state of roads and a broken bridge in the community.

When Mr Anhwere arrived at the scene to assess the situation and offer support, he was met with anger and frustration from the constituents. The residents booed him and even resorted to pelting stones and other objects.

Despite attempting to explain his presence and purpose, the MP’s explanations fell on deaf ears, and the residents continued their assault. Fortunately, the timely intervention of the police prevented the situation from escalating further.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, Mr. Anhwere, expressed gratitude for the police intervention, acknowledging that the outcome could have been vastly different without their presence.

“It rained in the area and someone was reported dead and there has been agitation in the community. The deceased’s brother called me to come over because they needed some gravel to fill the place so that cars could ply the roads. When I went, that thing happened, and they had to escort me and I left. That’s all. Honestly, but for the police, it would have been a different story. When they saw the crowd was increasing, they just escorted me to my car,” he recounted.
