The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, has been officially sworn into office, cementing the NDC’s absolute two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Her swearing-in, which took place on Tuesday, was conducted by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. The ceremony, however, was marked by a protest walkout from the Minority Caucus, following the Speaker’s rejection of a request by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh to make a statement prior to the swearing-in.
Aubynn’s entry into Parliament follows her hard-fought victory in the recently held rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election. The rerun became necessary after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the December 2024 poll results in 19 polling stations over serious concerns of electoral irregularities and the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets.
According to the EC, the original results were withheld due to unsigned result forms, discrepancies in vote counts, and breaches of electoral procedures during the collation process.
In the rerun held earlier this month, Ewurabena Aubynn clinched a narrow win, polling 34,090 votes to edge out the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Akua Afriyie, who secured 33,881 votes.
